Iffezheim Barrage Dam

The Iffezheim Barrage Dam is a favourite tourist destination. This engineering marvel of the century is a joint European project consisting of a sluice, power station and weir.

Roughly 45,000 ships carrying around 25 million tonnes of cargo pass through this barrage dam on the Rhine each year. A sightseeing attraction that amazes hundreds of visitors daily. Of equal interest is the fish ladder, praised as being the largest fish passageway in Europe and a significant ecological project.

The 300-metre-long concrete conduit modelled after a white-water brook is intended to offer large migrating fish a stable habitat, thus enabling a return to the Rhine all the way to their ancestral spawning areas.

Since the fish ladder was completed in May 2000, plenty of visitors both large and small have been pressing their noses to the windows daily to watch how the fish swim home step by step.
