Rastatt´s Baroque Seat &
Schloss Favorite Palace
Rastatt was the first baroque royal residence on German soil. It was erected using Versailles as a model. Still intact for the most part, the monumental palace complex depicts a uniquely authentic example of a royal seat from the early 18th century. Margrave Ludwig Wilhelm von Baden-Baden, known as "Türkenlouis" from doing battle with the Turks, had the hunting lodge begun in 1698 expanded to an imposing royal seat as of 1700, and had a town with model houses laid out according to plan. The exquisitely furnished rooms of state on the principal "Belétage" floor give insights into an absolute monarch's life at court. The focal point of the entire palace complex is the "Ahnensaal", or ancestral hall, with its impressively opulent original furnishings. A small casket represents the former "Court Chapel to the Holy Cross" built from 1719 to 1721.
Inside of the residence thera are two museums:
- Das Wehrgeschichtliche Museum, Internet: www.wgm-rastatt.de
- Die Erinnerungsstätte für die Freiheitsbewegungen in der deutschen Geschichte

Schloss Favorite Palace is located quite close to Rastatt. It is the oldest German "porcelain palace", and the only one still preserved in its original form. Margravine Sibylla Augus-ta von Baden-Baden, the young widow of "Türkenlouis", commissioned the Bohemian architect Rohrer in 1710/11 with the construction of a summer residence and hunting lodge. Valuable pieces in the form of porcelain, glass and fayence collections were exhibited decoratively in the rooms and were already famous during the margravine's lifetime.
