Gernsbach - Historic Old Town on the Murg
Decorated copiously with flowers, this destination on the S 41 city tram line is almost kept as a tip for insiders, known not only due to the quality of the air. Also known as the "pearl of the Murgtal Valley", Gernsbach can look back on an eventful past. Impressive monuments in the historic Old Town testify to the wealth of days gone by when Murg rafters brought their oak logs across the Murg and Rhine all the way to Rotterdam. Picturesque half-timbered houses, fountains and the town's old fortifications invite vistors to stroll among the twisted alleyways. From the "Alte Rathaus", the old town hall and probably most famous and prettiest building in the Murgtal Valley, where one can still get married 'in style', the path goes on to the marketplace with its inviting bistros and cafés.
One special experience is a walk through the "Katz’schen Garten", a baroque garden with a unique wealth of plants. Visitors also find relaxation, peace and quiet in the wild and romantic "Kurpark", where first-class open-air theatre can be seen on mild summer evenings.
A festive highlight each year is the "Gernsbacher Altstadtfest". When the cosy pubs and twisted lanes in the painstakingly restored Old Town open themselves up for natives and visitors alike, that's a chance to experience Gernsbach at its best. And no one should pass up the grand fireworks display on the Murg Promenade.
