Travel Tips
The following travel tips are intended to document the touristic and cultural diversity of this unique region. The distinctive structure of the landscape in the northern Black Forest makes it a most promising destination for hikers, cyclists and winter-sports fans. Expressive mountain ridges mark the holiday area along the "Schwarzwaldhochstrasse" roadway. Over 500 kilometres of well-signposted walking and hiking paths invite visitors to explore nature, whereby each kilometre is an experience unto itself: solitude and tranquility for the soul, the fabulous panoramic backdrop of the Black Forest for the eye. The morainic Karsee highland moor lakes offer a natural adventure all their own.
The foothills from Sinzheim to Bühl, the Bühlertal Valley and on to Ottersweier are typified by a sunny climate and grace-ful hills covered with grapevines. The Rhine Plain between Au am Rhein, Rastatt and Lichtenau presents a dorado for both water-sport and bathing enthusiasts. Numerous artifi-cial lakes in former quarries, sight-seeing spots and bicycle paths are attractive leisure-time destinations in the PAMINA Rhine Park. The largest protected area of interconnected fluvial landscapes and waterways is located here. Covering nearly 3,000 hectares on both sides of the Rhine, this major nature preserve exhibits fascinating flora and fauna.
Magnificent palatial estates and castles invite visitors to linger, and testify to the highly varied history of this holiday region. Cultural highlights include the "klag-Bühne" in Gaggenau, a mecca for cabaret and variety programmes, the Hoftheater theatre in Scherzheim, the Schwarzacher Münster cathedral and the Volksschauspiele festival in Ötigheim on Germany's largest open-air stage.
A gourmet and wine-lovers' paradise has been created in this three-tiered landscape by the immediate vicinity to France, yet also through the favourable climatic conditions and soil formations extremely well-suited to viniculture, fruit and specialised agricultural cultivation. Whether star-studded restaurants or rustic regional locales – hospitality has a tradition here. The culinary selection offered promises palate-pleasing delights and a thrill for the senses.
